Back to Basics: How Izzy Wing’s Canopy Course Felt Like Learning All Over Again

Table of Contents

Sometimes, skydiving surprises you—not with the adrenaline, but with how much you still have to learn.

I recently took Izzy Wing’s canopy course, and let me tell you… it felt like starting from scratch in the best possible way. It reminded me that even after dozens of jumps, earning licenses, and getting comfortable under canopy, there’s always another layer to peel back, another skill to sharpen, and another opportunity to fly smarter.

“I Thought I Knew What I Was Doing…”

That was the general vibe at the start. Most of us in the course had some experience. We’d all landed dozens of times and figured, “Yeah, I know how to fly my canopy.” But Izzy has a way of showing you how much more you’re capable of—and how many habits you may have picked up without even realizing it.

From the moment we started, it was clear this wasn’t just about landing accuracy or swooping flair. It was about canopy awareness, decision-making, flight planning, and mastering control in ways many of us hadn’t truly tapped into before.

Everyone Learned—No Matter Their Experience

The coolest part? Every single person in that course walked away better—regardless of skill level. Whether it was a newer jumper or someone with hundreds of landings, we all benefited.

We learned:

  • How to break our patterns and fly with purpose
  • How to read winds, patterns, and approach angles more effectively
  • How to make corrections early instead of reacting too late
  • And most importantly… how to land consistently, safely, and with confidence

Izzy’s Style = Empowering

Izzy Wings Stevie Simpson doesn’t just tell you what to do—he helps you understand why it matters. His instruction was clear, calm, and always supportive. There was no ego, no pressure, just a deep passion for helping each of us fly better and safer. And that kind of energy is contagious.

By the end, we were all landing more precisely, flying with more intention, and walking away from each jump thinking, That felt solid.

Final Thoughts

Taking this course was one of the best decisions I’ve made in my progression. It humbled me, empowered me, and reminded me that the sky isn’t just about freefall—it’s about everything after the canopy opens, too.

If you’re a licensed skydiver and haven’t taken a canopy course yet, do it. Even if you think you’ve “got it down.” Especially if you think that.

Because learning how to fly your body is only half of it. Learning how to fly your canopy—that’s where your skydiving really takes flight.
